Ah, history
So I got to spend three hours pouring through the Board of Trustees Minutes from 1913 to 1919 looking for information on my Senior Thesis topic. I’m writing a history of one of the buildings on campus Petersen (Peterson) Hall. I’m really excited I hope it works out. But anyway while I was looking for Petersen Hall I came across some other fun stuff. Teacher Salaries, Piano expenses, and a yearly health of the students report. In one health of the students report I came across a familar name. While my friend Sarah was working in the archives, she spent time transcribing class rolls and came across some fabulous names. One of the names that she shared and we thought rather unusual was Haseltine. Well, while I was perusing the Minutes I came across the fate of one Haseltine and I thought I would share.
pg 48-49, UM Trustees Minutes, Volume Three. Presidents update- May 20th, 1911.
Haseltine Neighbors of Sylacauga, Talladega Co., died Febuary 11, 1911 two or three weeks after her resignation. She was never strong and we thought of advising her to resign after Christmas on that account. Her relatives urged that she be allowed to continue as they thought she enjoyed better health hear than at home. Finally our Physician advised that she discontinue school work. She returned home and in a short time was taken sick again and did not recover.
As I read little pieces and came across names I wondered what happened to them. It’s like little windows I get a brief glimpse of the life within but only for a moment. It was fun and I’m going back Tuesday for more happy fun time.
Here’s another antecdote, UM Trustee’s Minute Volume Three- May 19, 1913
Teachers and officers no allowed to take lessons
On motion of Trustee Mangum-Yerby it was ordered that no teacher or officer be allowed to take any lessons in any department except such young teachers as may be recommended by President Palmer and confirmed by the Educational Committee.
Now why did they feel the need to make that official? Had they had problems with teachers going and sitting in on others classes? Who knows.
Anyway there you go. Montevallo history that most people don’t know.
